Eat Me Guilt Free Blondie - Review

I admit I love to nurse my sweet tooth. However, my sweet tooth is one that craves certain sweets, so this doesn't include candy or ice cream. No, this particular tooth craves sweet breads: pancakes, cookies, muffins, cakes, etc.

As everyone who also has a sweet tooth and has tried to lose weight (or get into better shape) can tell you, avoiding sweets to meet your fitness goals is hard. I mean, at times we may satisfy our need for something sweet by consuming fruit throughout the day. Alas, later on in the evening, our willpower diminishes and we sneak in a little piece of decadent goodness.

"Health" Foods

It's apparent that the health foods industry took notice to our love of sweets. As you can clearly see when walking into a supermarket, there's gluten-free everything, zero sugars here, and low calories over there. Some of it is very superficial, and others are a legitimate—like some nut bars and liquid beverages. However, some people don't mind a bit of processed ingredients in their foods and go after these "healthy" foods.

I must admit, once upon a time I ate very clean. Clean eating involves not eating anything that is processed—you simply eat whole foods.

Well, those days are long and gone. I don't eat badly by any means, and do still eat whole foods... I just may eat a bit more processed things than I'd like to. Anyway, one of the things that I have a bad habit for are protein bars: I love ThinkThin and NuGo Slim bars. I used to be on a Quest bars kick, but got quickly burnt out on them because they were just too sweet. I know what you’re thinking. How can something be too sweet for some who loves sugar? I guess it's because at the end of the day, it just isn’t real sugar.

However, I also consume Vegan protein powders (because I simply like the taste of them more than whey or casein ones) and those have stevia in them. I can handle the sweetness in those because it's very minimal the amount they actually put in.

So, you read this far along and are now probably thinking, "Okay Laura, we get what you consume. What does this have to do with Eat Me Guilt Free?" Well, I promise

Stevia - Too Much of a Good Thing

I came cross Eat Me Guilt Free on Instagram and immediately followed them when I saw they made decadent sweet bread goodness that was "healthy" and full of protein. What? This can’t be true, but it certainly is! Their Brownies and Blondies are full of protein (at a whopping 22 grams), are low in calories, carbs and have zero sugar.

Furthermore, it’s really impressive how little ingredients make up a Brownie/Blondie: protein whey powder, ground roasted organic peanuts, almond oil, hazelnut oil, coconut oil, stevia, salt, baking soda, sodium benzoate. That's it.

So, it appears that Eat Me Guilt Free has sweet breads that are protein-packed with decent ingredients… oh my goodness! Where can I buy this?

When I proceed to their website to go to purchase some, I hesitated. With shipping, it was a little over $40 for a box of 12, and at that time I didn't have that kind of money to spend on these (I was also a cheapskate then). So I told myself if I came across a store that sells them, I'd totally buy one to try.

I finally had the opportunity to do so earlier this week when I went to my Crossfit class at Thirdspace Fitness located in downtown San Jose. I was walking past their one and only fridge when I spotted Eat Me Guilt Free Blondies. I totally recognized the packaging and got so excited that I was finally able to try one. Thirdspace only had the Blondie, so I grabbed one and purchased it for four bucks.

The next day, it was time to finally eat this protein-packed Blondie. It's actually a decent size and is perfect for a mid-morning/mid-afternoon snack. I decided to eat one before I had my lunch (when you have a sweet tooth, it can kick in at any time of day). I finally bit in…

Holy Stevia! This was the first thing I thought after my first bite. I immediately took a second bite to see if I could pick up some other flavor notes other than the Stevia "sugar." Nope—that's all that she wrote when it came to this Blondie. As for the texture, it was very spongy, but it could have been worse.

I finished the Blondie since it wasn't the worst thing I've ever eaten—but man, what a disappointment.

Now, I must say that taste is very subjective. There are people out there who give Eat Me Guilt Free's baked goods a solid five out of five. Unfortunately, I have to give them a two out of five, and this is strictly based off the Blondie. Eat Me Guilt Free makes other products such as peanut butter, protein powders and a DIY Brownie mix. I'm sure they have products in there that are tastier that the Blondie I tried.

Unfortunately, my expectations for these weren't met. I don't know if I'll try the chocolate brownie. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if I gave it another go—I believe in second chances.

  1. My expectations were not met either. When my item arrived they didn't taste quite right. Called the company without a call back. Called during my lunch hour and spoke to the associate. I sent pictures of the molded and close to date products. This wasn't good enough for them. She pretty much said too bad, but here's a 10% discount. Thank but no thanks. The product was a huge disappointment. :(

    1. Ugh! That really sucks. You would think that they would replace the whole box at the very least.

  3. I am equally disappointed. My order took over a month to arrive and finally when I bite into the birthday cake it was dry spongy and tasted a bit tart just not to my liking nor expectation. I'm stuck with a box of mixed flavors but I definitely won't be purchasing again. Sorry I know the product contains healthier choices than many of the protein packed cookies and treats out but the taste was just intolerable for me.

    1. Sounds like I'm not the only one! Yea, they worst part is that they look so good...but aren't. If you're looking for a treat to satisfy your sweet tooth, I would look at NuGo slim bars, or my absolute favorite: Raw Reve Glo bars. I would try the peanut butter, chocolate and sea salt.

      Thanks for reading!

  4. I've never tried anything other than the chocolate brownies, but they are awesome! Especially if you warm it for about 10 seconds. Just to make sure that it wasn't only my taste buds that were singing. I gave 3 brownies to my friends and they all said the same thing, how much and where can I get them... It may just be that the chocolate brownie is their one and only winner. Hope this helps!

  6. hello i would like to thank you for your review. saved me a few bucks
i know it takes a bit more effort but there are great protein cake recipes that require a few ingredients that you can make in your own kitchen

    1. Yea, I agree--lately I've been baking my own healthy goods.

  7. I was so excited about these. You nailed it, though. I couldn't figure out what that almost chemical taste was that over powered the entire super dry product and that's totally it -- Stevia! I bought a sampler of all of the cakes/brownies (brownies, blondies, peanut butter chocolate bliss, cinnamon toast cake and birthday cake) and must say all of the "blonde" ones are almost inedible. I have to both microwave them and put something on them to even choke them down. The brownie was just about as inedible, though microwaving helped. The only one I've been able to eat plain (still microwaved) is the peanut butter chocolate bliss. I have an entire box of their cookies in my freezer..... here's to hoping those are a bit more enjoyable. Wish I would have found your review before I bought the product!! :-) :-) Though now I realize why everyone who likes these shows them coated in chocolate, icing, or something else when posting on instagram. Should've been a red flag -- they're inedible otherwise!! haha

  8. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I also haven't tried any other flavors... I guess I was too turned off by the blondie. Oh well! :)

  9. I'm on a strict keto diet (where you avoid sugars and other ingredients which can convert to sugar to spike your insulin) but chose as my first cheat in SEVEN MONTHS (high praise indeed!) to sample the chocolate product at a supermarket sampling stand and my only complaint, aside from the relatively high carb content, was the addition of coconut palm sugar instead of pure stevia, and my only suggestion was to use only a stevia/monkfruit blend. You can't please everybody. As someone with the discipline to avoid "unhealthy snacks" (and snacks in general!), and as someone who avoided non-hidden sugar for decades, I find the disappointment of people who discount this product because of the taste of stevia disheartening. You all should thank your lucky stars that a sweetened, "low carb" "bread-y" product like this exists! It's not healthy enough for me, but if I were the average dieter I'd be doing CARTWHEELS over this!
